Sie beschreibt die sozialen Konstellationen und kommunikativen Verfahren (wie erzählen, diskutieren), die gesellige Situationen kennzeichnen. Sie zeigt, dass sich grundlegende Prinzipien von Geselligkeit schon in der mittelalterlichen Literatur ausbilden. Im Zentrum stehen neben Texten der mittelhochdeutschen Literatur die geselligen Entwürfe in zwei Texten Boccaccios (Filocolo, Decameron), die sich für die europäische Literatur des späten Mittelalters als besonders wirkungsmächtig erweisen.
