Der Mehrwert von Hedgefonds in einem Portfolio soll anhand einer Effizienzlinienverschiebung untersucht werden.
Zu Beginn der Arbeit werden die wesentlichen Grundlagen der modernen Portfoliotheorie erläutert, um die später folgende examine vornehmen zu kön-nen. Zunächst wird in diesem Kapital auf die Portfolio-Selection-Theorie von Markowitz eingegangen. In diesem Zusammenhang sind die Begriffe Diversifi-kation und Korrelation sowie das Prinzip der Effizienzlinie näher zu erläutern. Anschließend werden die verschiedenen Arten von Informationseffizienz und das Entstehen von Marktanomalien, welche für bestimmte Hedgefondsstrategien von Bedeutung sind, beschrieben.

Im dritten Kapitel wird ein Überblick über die verschiedenen Arten von Alternativen Investments gegeben. Zu Beginn des Kapitels soll der Begriff der Alternativen Investments zu dem der traditionellen abgegrenzt werden. Anschließend erfolgt eine kurze Beschreibung der unterschiedlichen Investitionsmöglichkeiten im alternativen Bereich.
Das anschließende Kapitel beschäftigt sich ausschließlich mit dem Thema Hedgefonds, wobei insbesondere auf die Investitionsmotive sowie die Merkmale und Risiken der einzelnen Strategien detailliert eingegangen wird. Ebenfalls ist die Marktverteilung der verschiedenen Strategien in diesem Kontext zu erwähnen. Die empirische Untersuchung im fünften Kapitel stellt den eigentlichen Kern der Arbeit dar. Die Untersuchung erfolgt mit Hilfe unterschiedlicher Hedgefondsindizes sowie dem Aktienindex DAX und dem Rentenindex REXP. Zunächst wird die Renditeverteilung von Hedgefonds abhängig von ihrer Strategie untersucht. Auf foundation des vorliegenden Zahlenmaterials erfolgt anschließend die Ermittlung der Effizienzlinien aus verschiedenen Investmentkombinationen. Den Abschluss des Kapitels bildet die Berechnung und examine des Minimum-Varianz-Portfolios, des Maximum-Sharpe-Ratio-Portfolios sowie des price in danger eines Beispielportfolios.
